The Expo Center of the prestigious Eko Hotels, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria, will be the venue of the biggest football awards in Africa today, 9 January, 2014, as top Nigerian music stars, P-Square, D'banj and Lagbaja entertain guests while the trio of Nigerian Super Eagles and Chelsea of England midfield gem, John Obi Mikel battles Ivory Coast's duo of Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba for the coveted Globacom sponsored African Footballer of The Year diadem.
The star studded event will see whether Mikel who is currently an African champion can upstage past winners, Toure and Drogba.
While many Nigerians feel the Jos born soccer prodigy has done enough to nick the top prize after winning the African Cup of Nations and helping Chelsea to the Champions League and Europa Cup, others say that Yaya Toure is the better player though all he has achieved has been in the colours of his English Premiership club, Manchester City.
To set the tone for the event, Chelsea Football Club flew Mikel in their private jet to Nigeria and it is hoped that he will adorn the jet with the trophy when going back to England.
